Wayland Chu graduated from The School Of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. His detailed artwork is made using mixed media, primarily pen and ink, watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, and marker. Chu’s work is interested in where the figurative meets the abstract. Each piece is an exploration into how the two can be reconciled and exist simultaneously.
Consistently drawing inspiration from the human form, each piece dives headlong into layered compositions that evoke stained glass murals and body horror in equal parts. With a love of the strange and grotesque, Chu’s work is infatuated with the quiet dignity that can exist in the bizarre. How ugly can something be while still being beautiful?
