Chadwin Cosmic Art

My name is Chadwin, I am a 27 year old self-taught & independent artist currently based out of Denver, CO.

I have been practicing Geometric Abstraction for over 6 years now with a focus on creating my own style of repeating patterns to eventually be used in textile design. Although I’ve been squiggling for as long as I can remember, my style has really seen most of its development through the recent years spent more deliberately pursuing a career as an artist. As a young child I spent a lot of my free time with a marker in my hand & it quickly became a “happy place” of sorts. By the time I was in middle school I was doodling in the margins of every piece of school work, filling notebooks with patterns & rarely paying more than half of my attention to either class or my creations; as a result, I rarely had the focus (nor patience) necessary to complete a thought as complex as many which found their way going through my head.

That is, until October 2018 at the age of 20 when I would truly commit myself to developing the skills which would be required in order to achieve my dream. At the time I was sharing an apartment with a talented glassblower by the name of Jonathan Faltermeier, seeing firsthand his passion to create was a pivotal piece of inspiration & motivation for me to embark upon my path as an artist. I’ve always seen the world through a lens specialized for identifying patterns, and shapes are some of the most easy to recognize patterns for the human mind which is a masterful tool for doing so; thus, I express my views on the world through shapes! A sports injury in my adolescence revealed chronic illness which would bring along pain along with other symptoms including the shaking hands which would eventually pair with my love for patterns in order to spawn my own unique style. When I first started creating abstract designs, I was frustrated because I couldn’t manifest the symmetry or level of cleanliness I desired with freehand work. Naturally, I picked up tools; but, even with a compass & ruler at my disposal, my perfectionist nature was threatening to keep me from creating anything at all. I persevered through my frustrations though, and on the other side I figured out I could create the same shapes & patterns with this sort of chaotic balance created by the organic squiggles of my already shaking hand. Thus, my squiggled journey was started!

I see the world around me as a beautiful swirl of chaotic balance, my main goal with each abstract expression is to convey this perspective as well as contribute a bit of aesthetic joy into my surroundings & bring peace of mind to whomever lays eyes upon any of my completed work.

Creating patterns is a therapeutic process for me dealing with chronic illness & the accompanying pains; my process is based on similar principles as those behind Mandala & Zentangle styles with my own sort of blending the 2 together.

These days I work as regularly with acrylic paints as I do with my alcohol markers, making my completed pieces a balance of the 2, but my first love will always be the feeling of a fresh felt tip pressed to paper & that new Sharpie smell.
